Background of the Study

Water resource development plays a crucial role in enhancing agricultural productivity, especially in regions where rainfall is irregular or insufficient for crop production. Irrigation farming, which relies on the development and management of water resources, has been identified as a key factor in improving food security and economic stability in rural areas (Adeyemi & Ogunleye, 2023). In Nigeria, the use of irrigation systems has the potential to increase agricultural output, reduce dependency on seasonal rainfall, and improve the livelihoods of farmers.

Alkaleri Local Government Area, located in Bauchi State, faces the challenge of erratic rainfall patterns, which affects crop yields and agricultural productivity. To address this issue, various water resource development initiatives, such as dam construction and irrigation schemes, have been introduced to support farming activities. However, despite these efforts, the extent to which these developments have improved irrigation farming in Alkaleri remains unclear. This study seeks to assess the impact of water resource development on irrigation farming, exploring how these initiatives have influenced agricultural productivity and the economic well-being of farmers in the region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of water resources in Alkaleri, many farmers continue to struggle with low productivity due to inadequate infrastructure for irrigation, inefficient water management systems, and insufficient access to modern farming techniques (Ahmed & Hassan, 2023). While several water resource development projects have been implemented, including the construction of dams and boreholes, the challenges of water distribution and effective irrigation practices persist. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of water resource development on irrigation farming and explore the barriers that hinder the optimal use of water for agricultural purposes in Alkaleri.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of water resource development on irrigation farming in Alkaleri.

  2. To evaluate the role of irrigation systems in improving agricultural productivity.

  3. To identify challenges hindering the effective utilization of water resources for irrigation farming.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How has water resource development impacted irrigation farming in Alkaleri?

  2. What role do irrigation systems play in increasing agricultural productivity?

  3. What are the challenges limiting the effective use of water resources in irrigation farming in Alkaleri?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Water resource development has a significant positive impact on irrigation farming in Alkaleri.

  2. Irrigation systems lead to increased agricultural productivity in Alkaleri.

  3. Challenges such as poor infrastructure and inadequate water management limit the effectiveness of water resources in irrigation farming.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the role of water resource development in enhancing agricultural productivity in Alkaleri. The findings will help inform local government policies, guide future investments in irrigation infrastructure, and offer recommendations for improving water resource management to support sustainable agriculture. Additionally, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on water resource management in rural agricultural development.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on water resource development and irrigation farming within Alkaleri Local Government Area, Bauchi State. The research is limited to evaluating irrigation schemes that have been implemented in the past five years, and does not address other forms of agricultural development unrelated to irrigation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Water Resource Development: The planning, construction, and management of water infrastructure for agricultural and other productive purposes.

  • Irrigation Farming: The use of artificial water systems to irrigate crops, ensuring year-round crop production regardless of rainfall patterns.

  • Agricultural Productivity: The measure of the output of agricultural activities in a given area, often expressed in terms of yield per hectare or income per farm.
